Family Camping Trip, July 2021
Ah, camping at Ausable Chasm with your family is an amazing adventure!
The Adirondacks have always been a destination we wanted to explore, and this summer, they became the setting for an unforgettable adventure – a family camping trip to Ausable Chasm, the “Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks.” With towering rock walls, cascading waterfalls, and endless trails, it was the perfect spot for a getaway filled with thrills, exploration, and memories to last a lifetime.
We packed up our 5th wheel camper and headed north on the 87 towards the Ausable Chasm. For us this was a fairly short and easy drive and we arrived with more than enough time to set up our site and take a look around. Most of the amenities we not open or available as Covid was still a thing at that time – but we were not here for the pool, we were here for the nature.

Conquering the Chasm’s Depths:
The next day, the chasm beckoned. We started with the Rim Trail, a scenic path that hugs the canyon’s edge, offering breathtaking panoramas of the dramatic rock formations, rushing waterfalls and lush greenery.
Adventure Trail, if you are adventurous is a must do – This route involves traversing cliff faces with the help of cables and bridges, offering an exhilarating mix of adrenaline and stunning vistas. Though truth be told I am afraid of heights and damn near sh*t my pants walking across the suspension bridge – Both James and Ray loved it!
We got up close and personal with the river with the rafting tour. This departed from the Table Rock, and had us rafting gently between the towering cliffs of the Grand Flume, a beautiful sight of the narrowest section of Ausable Chasm. Next our guide had us navigating through the rapids and around the Whirlpool Basin, this is truly and amazing experience that we all will cherish!
Each night we would enjoy dinner at our campsite and of course have a camp fire. Fun fact: James had never had a smore before…We got the graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate out to teach him about this campfire favorite. We all roasted our marshmallow and made our smore and then waited for James’s response…A total look of peer disgust came over his face and we could not help but laugh – even now thinking about it, I am laughing again. He absolutely hated his smore.
Memories Made to Last:
By the end of the trip, we were relaxed and happy. We had conquered challenges, embraced the beauty of nature, and most importantly, shared unforgettable moments as a family. Ausable Chasm wasn’t just a camping trip; it was an adventure that brought us closer and created memories that will forever be etched in our hearts.
