This isn’t just a vacation folks, it’s an experience that embraces our capacity to renew, restore, and relish nature’s beauty, all while having the time of our lives! MSC Cruises took the helm and steered their ship towards a sustainable future by transforming Ocean Cay into a Marine Reserve. In doing so, they’ve created a haven for marine life, a thriving ecosystem that flourishes spectacularly under the Bahamian sun!
DID YOU KNOW…Once an industrial sand excavation site, Ocean Cay was a seemingly barren land scattered with construction ruins and devoid of much life. When MSC Cruises set eyes on this deserted spot, they didn’t see an eyesore but an opportunity – an opportunity to restore, rejuvenate, and revitalize! The journey wasn’t easy. Extensive groundwork that took years to finish, this involved the removal of tons of industrial waste.
With industrial waste out of the way, MSC Cruises set about creating an ecosystem that would not just survive but thrive! Over 75,000 plants and trees were installed to create a verdant green canopy. The waters surrounding the island were carefully nurtured back to health, leading to a thriving population of coral, algae, and essential marine life that called it home. As part of its initiative to uphold marine life, MSC Cruises has dedicated efforts to protect endangered species, especially sea turtles. In collaboration with environmental agencies, it’s working tirelessly to create safe havens for these sea turtles within the island.
When we were there in January for a vacation we were thrilled to see two sea turtles in the marina, along with several small fish, many barracudas and an iguana. Thank you MSC for creating this haven!
